History

According to legend in 1921 Dr. and Mrs. W.V.B. Ames built a house on 2,000 acres on the southeast side of South Mountain. In 1933 the Ames willed the home and land to St. Lukes. In 1935 the house and land were purchased by Helen Brinton who named the town to the name of the Crow words “awe chuuke”, which means “land in the next valley”. Most likely Ahwatukee’s namesake came from Brinton’s naming of the town.

In 1971 parts of the area were purchased, subdivided, and developed by Presley Development Company. Between 1978 and 1987 Ahwatukee was annexed by the City of Phoenix.
